Ode to Bloomers

Bloomers.  Great Grandma's undies.  I remember being a little girl and laughing at my Grandma's underwear.  They were not this kind of bloomers but they were humongous.  We teased her and called them Bloomers, Drawers, Betty Lou's and she sometimes called them Buckmores.  Not sure if that was a brand at the time or not.  All I know for sure is if she had still been alive when the thong gained popularity, she would have died!

This summer I've fallen in love with the T-shirt dress.  So easy and comfortable. And it's just one thing - no trying to match tops to pants etc.   One thing......so simple.  For dressy add a scarf and some chunky jewelry and you are good to go.  Take off the embellishments and its super casual.

But there is a snag.  If you are like me and have a little middle age spread or muffin top, you are faced with an undergarment dilemma.   I tried on these dresses with all my undies and it just wasn't working. It was like looking at rolling sand dunes under that jersey cotton!!

So, what's a girl to do?  Well you ask your girlfriends of course.  I was talking to a friend one day who regularly wears these types of dresses so I said something like "So, what kind of drawers have you got under that dress?"  Lol. Women of a certain age get comfortable with these types of questions.   She says "well you need to get a full size brief."   Like Granny Panties?  Yup!

Remember that scene in Bridget Jones Diary when Hugh Grant gets a peek under her dress and says "those are some enormous panties".  Well, that's what I needed - a few pairs of enormous drawers!

I shudder to admit this......but these granny panties (with a little tummy sucking spandex) are pretty freaking comfortable.  There, I said it.  I'm an (occasional) granny panty girl ;).

(But don't spread it around, OK?)

  4. Ha,ha,ha, great topic this morning. I'm late for work but I came upon your post and couldn't leave without leaving a quick comment. You are doing an enormous favor by bringing up this topic. Very enlightening.
I wonder if it because of the shrinking economy or the global warming but I remember when it was not so complicated to choose underwear. I never tried to wear that butt floss and even the one next to it but I've seen some pretty horrendous sights on the street with tell tales of not choosing proper butt covers.

Got to go. Have a great weekend.
    Hugs,
    JB

  7. My grandma used to call them step-ins. She embarrassed the heck out of me one time when she asked if I needed new step-ins for Christmas, in front of my brother and male cousins.
Recently I helped my daughter fold her laundry and when it came to her panties I asked "why bother"?
Thanks for the laugh this morning!!

  8. Full size brief? Does it get any sexier sounding than that?! As you know, I am falling out of more than my underpants..."swirling" everywhere! Love the evolution of undies there!

  9. Ima 100% Cotton Jockey Elance Hipster gal myself. Granny panties or briefs are good too if I am not wearing jeans that ride a teeny bit low. My best gal pal since kindeegarten calls my hipsters "spanky pants". Of course she wears those skimpy leopard things I wouldn't be caught dead in. Way back I wore Carters with boy cut legs and I still like the boy cut legs! More info than you ever wanted about my undies huh Kim! Glad you found a solution to your problem.. :) You know though Jockey does not make the great quality undies they used to. Gives me a cranky, I have had to try out other brands.

  10. I wear Jockey's too, but I agree with the previous comment that they aren't what they used to be. I will never understand how girls can stand to wear thongs :)

  13. well you got some comments on the panties thing. I wear a lot of skirts and cotton dresses I think they are cooler than shorts. I say wear what's comfortable who is going to see your undies? I know I have seen more undies from the kids than I will ever need to see in a life time. boys pull them up girls pull them down it is not cute to see them above your jeans
I will be checking to see if tshirt dress come in the wholly cow size
