Time to fish or cut bait

I think I am at a crossroads with my rug hooking.  I can't seem to get going again.

Things got busy and crazy around here and the hooking got pushed to the side for a few weeks.  Then another week passed and now it has been almost a month.

I promised myself yesterday that I was going to work on the rug last night.   Didn't happen.

I now am of the opinion that the problem is this particular rug.  It is too large and even when I hooked on it for an hour or so, it still looked like I had done nothing.    So today I debated my options.  For awhile I considered tweeking it to see if I could just finish half but that doesn't seem like it will work.

I still like the idea of the rug, but I just don't want to work on it now.  So I think I will just put it away.  I feel like working on a small something so I can feel like I am accomplishing.  The final result - I'm going to cut bait on this project.

I am willing to bet that in the middle of winter I will want to hook again with all these warm colors.

Today is was pouring rain and very chilly.  I couldn't seem to get warm today.  And poor little Millie actually had to be thrown outside.  She hates to get wet, so as soon as I open the door and it is raining, she tries to run back inside.

She got soaked.  And then she got crabby.  And then she got spoiled.

Awww, how cute is she ??

  1. My Freddy hates to be out in the rain too. I have to tug and tug and tug at the leash to get him going out there. He and Millie could compare horror stories!

  2. She is the cutest thing ever. I just love her little face. I can tell though you are going to be in hot water awhile. :)
I felt that same way about that Halloween rug, it was just to darn big. I made myself start the rug I was putting off today. Yep, I thought, Kim is going to start hooking so I am too. So I did and even the wool I didn't want to cut, I said, I will do it anyway.
So there you go, it felt so nice to hold a hook today. Just like coming home.
I hope you get warm. Still hot here.

  5. Cute little Millie...she looks so cozy! Hey, don't stress about the lull in your art. I actually play the fiddle. I've had years where I've been obsessed...played for hours a day and became quite good. Then, life changes. Challenges get in the way...or one finds another artistic love. It's a process and it comes in waves. Learn to love the fallow times...they bring new fruit later. You will return to hooking with a new zeal. Try something new, or read and recoup, cook, dance, watch movies...whatever floats your boat. Just trust the break and know that you'll be back to creating very soon!
    Hugs!

  7. Now THAT is what I call a CUTE little doggie!! She is STINKIN' cute!!

As for hooking - ahhh - had I the answers, I'd not need therapy. ;o) Kidding.... But I go through these hiatuses way, way, too frequently. Sometimes it's the rug - sometimes it's actually the craft - and sometimes it's just me. I LOVE hooking - but, to be honest, I probably haven't not held my hook for 3 or 4 months - not one stinking time. I find that when I'm in my "funk", if I pick up a different project (for me that would be a punched piece or a cross-stitch design usually), I'm renewed. They go much more quickly and do not crowd me - and then I get inspired to hook again and am glad. I think Courtney hit the nail on the proverbial head....me, I'm just babbling. Recharge, renew, and do what you wanna do!! Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin (It's blustery and cold here too - can't get warm either....Think Miss Millie would share that blankie of hers???) ;o)

  8. Sometimes when a project is stalling your momentum, you just have to put it aside and go on to something else. Maybe it will work in the future or if the inspiration never seems to come, it can be dealt with later. Do what makes you happy now!

Poor little Millie! I hope she got lots of spoiling after having to endure the elements!

  9. well.. I blabbed on and on then the darn comment didn't post! LOL!
    I'll try again!
Little Miss Millie is the cutest little thing ever! I know my rough and tumble furry boys even hate going out in the cold rain! Can't imagine poor little Millie! Ugh!.... how can it be that time of year already!
About your rug..... I say cut the bait too save the big guy for later! I wouldn't waste one iota of a minute on something that wasn't doing it for me! You'll surely find something smaller that will go quickly and get the juices flowing again!
    Hugs!

  10. You'll appreciate that project later, I'm sure. It's OK to put some things aside. I think we need to reevaluate our lives many times and sometimes that means giving up a good thing for something better...like time, sleep, happiness...well, you get it! Millie is really cute. We've had the same rain and cold here and at work everyone was telling the same dog tale...throwing them out in the rain! I laughed at the the last pic..it looks like my Mom's hair after she washes it...don't tell her I said that...

  11. Kim ~
    Millie is just TOO CUTE!!!
I think you have the right idea. Put the rug away and hook something small you can get done rather quickly. It will recharge the old hookin' battery.
    Pug hugs :)

  12. I've done that with projects before - when you come back to it, it will seem fresh again. Your little doggie is cute - easy to spoil them, isn't it?

  14. Awwww... Millie looks like such a sweetie! :-) I think you did good with putting the rug away for awhile. I've done 4 or 5 rugs that were pretty big and can understand your dilema completely! Have a great weekend!

  15. My Scoobie is the same way...hates the wet...and SNOW! It's raining now and I'm about to take him out. Millie looks sooo cute wrapped up. Actually Millie looks a lot like Scoob.
As for the rug, putting it away will help. I do that with sewing too and sometimes inspiration just hits you and it will be gorgeous when it's done! I like it already. Good luck!

  16. Millie is so cute..I think it would be good to try something else because it is now a job and not enjoyment.
you will go back to it.

  17. How cute is she? There are no words! Tucker is shivering right now but I have him all wrapped up in a blanket that I put in front of the heater and warmed up first! He LOVES it! And he thinks Millie is cute too! LOL

I love that rug! But I know how you feel---I'm that way with a knitting project...or ten. :)

  18. It's hard to kick-start a project once you've laid it aside for a period of time. I should know... I have a bunch of them setting in my garage :-(

God Bless and have a Wonderful Weekend :-)
