Finding dimes

Ok, I know this may sound strange.  Trust me, I kind of agree with you but here it goes.  Lately I have been finding dimes.  Enough so that it made me curious.

In the last week I found one in my driveway, then a few days ago I found one by my back door and this morning there was one on the floor beside my bed.  Only dimes, no other coins.  And no I don't have holes in my pockets and I rarely pay cash for anything so why the coins?

When I found this mornings by the bed, I had to wonder what it meant. Seemed too bizarre for a coincidence.  So I googled "what does it mean when you keep finding dimes?"   A whole bunch of site came up but I clicked on this one

http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/1273460-dimes-from-heaven-women-find-coins-after-loved-ones’-deaths

Now I'm not saying I completely believe this but isn't it a nice thought?  From now on I'm going to pay attention and keep those dimes (if I find anymore).

Mother Nature 2 - Abby 0

Abby had a rough morning. Mother Nature showed her who's boss on our morning walk.  We were barely a half a block when she seemed to be biting at her front paw.  Burdocks !

I hate those things.  It was only a couple and I was able to pull them off her right there but it upset her so that ended our walk.  The humidity had dropped today.  Dare I say it was almost pleasant out.  So we went back out at noon for a proper walk.  I stupidly went the same way and not too far and she was freaking out.  At first I thought she was chasing her tail but then I bent down to look and.......

The poor thing had a whole butt full of burdocks.  And they had really worked their way into that curly fur.  So I had to pick her up and bring her home and try to remove them from a traumatized puppy.   I had to cut them out with scissors,   God I hate those things.   So tomorrow we will take a different walking route and hope for the best.

Since the weather was tolerable, and chocolate chips where on sale this week, I baked after supper.  Original Toll House cookies.

Mmmmmm the cookie jar is full for a change.  Back to work tomorrow.  Yay for air conditioning

Not a watchdog

Poodles are known for being great watchdogs.  Millie would sound like a Rottweiler when someone came to the door.  Abby seems to have missed that gene.  The doorbell rings and she just lifts her head.  She might bark once or twice a day, usually out of frustration during an episode of chasing her tail. I don't mind at all.  In fact I'm glad she's not yappy. However she proved to be not very brave this morning.

We started out on our regular morning route at 7am.  We turned in to the side street and behind us heard vicious barking.  Well, she was running the other way.  I looked over my shoulder and saw a large strange dog about 3 houses down.  I couldn't tell if it was tied or not but it didn't seem to be chasing us, just barking.  Poor Abby was in high gear.  Instead of turning right like usual, she was running back home.
When we got in house I unhooked her leash and turned to hang it up.  Normally Abby goes right to her dish after our walk.  She was nowhere to be found.  I found her here

She had bolted up the stairs. Lol. What a great brave watchdog she is.   Snort!

I would say her Momma isn't too smart either. We are still in a heatwave and I decided to make a beef stew with dumplings today. I only did it because I had bought beef stew meat earlier in the week and forgot to freeze it.  So into the slow cooker it went and it's now in the freezer.  I'll appreciate it more on a future colder day.

It looked and smelled good but I couldn't bring myself to eat anything hot.  It's really too hot to do anything.  Abby spent much of the day under the sofa.  Occasionally she will venture out and sprawl out by my side

Another day of sweating and moaning tomorrow

Hotter

Annnnnnd it's even hotter today than yesterday so the hatefulness continues...... I think tomorrow morning I'll go out on the sidewalk to make my breakfast.  Sigh.......

To it I wheeled the stinky compost bin up to the street for pick up tomorrow. Let me tell you, that thing was ripe.  Gag!

Abby is spending a lot of time laying in the cool kitchen floor. Poor thing with all that black fur.  Since I was cranky seemed like a good time to call the Internet company and complain about the sucky service lately.  Signal has been off and on - more off than on.  Lights all on the modem, signal indicator on but nothing would load or if it did and I tried to comment or email it would lose it half the time.

So they suggested I might have a faulty modem so I got a new one tonight and taadahh I'm online and holding a signal.  I'll try and visit some blogs tonight.  Tomorrow it's supposed to rain.  (Yeah!)

Heat Rant!

I'm sorry but I was due for a good rant.  Here you go......it's too hot......too damn hot!

And before anyone reminds me of last winter - I don't care.  I'm hot and cranky.  I'm no good in the heat.  I'm sweaty, cranky, uncomfortable, can't sleep, feel like a swamp person, miserable.....get the point?

To to add insult to injury, I had a doctors appointment this week.  Let me tell you, there is nothing to piss you off any more than a male doctor trying to tell you that menopause is a good thing.  He's never had a hot flash or a night sweat, had godforsaken hormonal mood swings or any of the other "treats" that go along with it.  He actually said "it's a good thing, just think you won't have to buy tampons soon". I swear to God, I don't know how I restrained myself from punching him in the throat.

I wonder how he or any of his male counterparts would feel if a woman doctor told them that erectile dysfunction is a good thing.  Testicles shrinking to the size of peas?  Just think, you could buy smaller underwear.    Imagine!!!

If this heat doesn't break soon I'm gonna snap.

Adventures with Abby

Not only is sweet Abby growing like a weed, her unique personality is bursting through.  She's a funny little thing. She's claimed a favorite spot to relax - by the back door, on top on my shoes.

This makes potty training a challenge as I never know if she's just chilling under the window or waiting to go out.  We're working on it......sigh

And she's a wee bit stubborn.  We've been working on the command "come".  She does when she feels like it.......sigh.   And we're working on walking properly on a leash.  She does fine until she sees a car, a person, a small twig, a stray leaf.  A walk around the small block can take forever.  It's going to be a real treat when all the leaves fall off the trees.....Not.   We're working on it......sigh

She wakes around 6:30am and promptly wakes me by........sticking her tongue in my ear.  Gross!  Try as I might to pretend it's George Clooney, it's not working.  It's just gross!

And although I can't get her to come on command, she will come every time I'm in the bathroom.  I love her but would really like to pee without an audience once in awhile.

And then there is the Great Escape - part 2.   Thursday night I had to go out.  She was alone most of the day and evening until 10pm.  From 10-11pm I tried to wear her out but when bedtime came (for me) she was not having it.  She ran up and down the bed, tearing apart sheets etc until I snapped at 1:40am. Down to her pen she went.  She cried and I went to bed.  Sometime later I awoke to a "thump". Loud enough that it required investigation.  The clock said 4am.  I turned on the hall light and there she was at the bottom step, wagging her tail.  OMG, how did she get out of the pen?  It's 2 feet high and it's not big enough to get a running start.  But somehow, some way she jumped it!!   I almost wish I could have seen it but this is what I imagined

When I left for work Friday morning I worried all morning, what side of the one she would be on at noon when I came home.  Thankfully she hasn't attempted the jump since.

And sometime in the last few days she has discovered her tail.  I've yet to be able to get a video of her chasing her tail but it's hilarious to watch her.  And after an exhausting session of this, she is ready to cuddle again.

Soon she will take residence in her second favorite spot - under the sofa

Hello!  She's really going to be upset when she can't fit under there anymore. And that day is coming soon.

In hiding

It would seem that every vindictive mosquito in Canada has moved into my neighborhood and they are all after me.  As soon as I step outside they just go for me.  It's almost a swarming :)

Abby only got 2 short walks today.  Our little stroll around the block this morning amounted to no fewer than 9 bites on my legs.  And that's with me swatting and flailing.  The second walk was no better. I look like I have measles and I'm scratching like a friggin lunatic.  ARRGHH. I'm not sure I've ever seen them this bad.

So I decided to hide out today and I'm glad I did.  I tried a new breakfast casserole this morning.  You put it together the night before and bake it in the morning.  Not bad, a good idea of you are having a brunch or something

Here is the recipe link. http://www.chef-in-training.com/2012/09/overnight-french-toast-souffle/

Since I was on a roll i threw a brown sugar/maple pork tenderloin in the slow cooker for supper, hung the laundry on the line and cleaned the kitchen and bathroom floors.  I also got another basket of peaches so I tried a peach crisp
http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/231532/moms-peach-crisp/

It would have been good with a little vanilla ice cream melting on top.  But it was still tasty on its own.  Now, I wonder what kind of domestic mayhem I can get into tomorrow?

12 weeks for Abby and a treat for me

Sweet Abby just had her 12 week needle today.  She was a brave little girl :). Very well behaved and now having a little rest after enjoying her favorite bone.  I do so love this little pup

And she's growing like a weed.  It was only a couple of weeks ago she could barely stretch enough to peek out the window on the front door.  Now it's no problem.  And I was curious to see how much she weighed because I can definitely feel a difference.  She's my little chunky monkey.  She's a whopping 5.6 pounds!  If you remember poor little Millie barely got to 4 pounds.

Now for my treat.  I splurged on myself today. And it has to be my last big house splurge but I could not resist.  Lauren.........you're going to be so jealous!  Lol.  I know how you love cabinets.

This is a 1930's Hoosier cabinet.  These are the sellers pics, as I have yet to fill it with goodies

I just love it.  It reminds me of my grandmother.  I love the enamel slide out baking table, and below it is a slide out cutting board,  it's distressed and chippy and I love it!

Rest and Recharge

Not the weekend I had planned.  Not that I had anything fabulous planned but.....  Friday I had a migraine.  The worst yet.  Seems like they are becoming a regular thing,  well a regular monthly thing.  Seems like I have discovered the 8th dwarf of menopause

Or so my Doctor says.   Ahhh, the joys of middle age!  So I spent a quiet weekend recovering a bit.  I cleaned the downstairs of the house.  The upstairs can wait :).    And I cooked a bit for the week and some for the freezer.

I don't know what it is about but when I have a headache, after I crave fruit.  Strange but true.  I loaded up on bananas, grapes, apples and a basket of fresh peaches.  So you know I had to made a peach pie

Sooooo good and juicy.   I spent a fair bit of time with Miss Abby.  We went for several walks a day.  I figured we both needed some exercise.  She is getting better on the leash although she still has her moments. And so far today, not one accident!

She really is a lap dog.  And she's growing fast.  We go to the vet Tuesday for her 12 week needle.  I'm anxious to see how much she weighs now.

Just a small bit left to hook on my rug.  I was sure I'd have it done by now but the weekends go so fast.

Some progress

Well, another week has flown by with no posts.  Back to work and establishing Abby's new workday routine has kept me on my toes.  Abby was not a happy camper my first day at work in her pen.  However, poodles are know for loving routines so by the end of the week she was adjusting better.  We are still having accidents.  Sigh..........patience......

I did hook a little more but not as much as I'd hoped.  And Saundra, I'm doing it KISS.....keeping it simple

The rest of the week included celebrating a friend's birthday.  She left me a pice of birthday cake - it was a triple layer, butter cream frosting cake

I decided to eat it for breakfast yesterday.  Be whimsical I thought, eat cake for breakfast.  OMG, I was sick all day.  I felt like crap from the sugar burst so early.  Never again!  Lol

We also had a fun event downtown in the park last night - "Menopausal Madness Movie Night". Mamma Mia singalong and movie.  The weather cooperated and a good crowd turned out in their finest overalls and feather boas.  Sorry I didn't get any usable pics.

That's it for now.

Hook

Finally, I found a pattern that inspired me to pick up my hook again.  A simple fun little pattern from Deanne Fitzpatrick.  It's one from the pattern of the month club.  I just picked it up yesterday and knew I wanted to hook it right away.   Assuming that Miss Abby would allow it.  Turns out she's a good little hooker dog :)   She let me start

Feels great to create something again.  Ok, gotta get more done while the hook is still hot!

An anniversary

I'm a day late but Abby's escape seemed more relevant yesterday.  But 1 year ago I became a homeowner.

Probably the biggest, scariest decision I've ever made but it's turned out to be the best decision. My humble little bungalow isn't fancy, it isn't stylishly decorated (yet) and is probably never going to be "finished" but it's HOME.

But really all this anniversary means is that I only have 19 years left on my mortgage.  LOL
