Red Gold?

This mornings trip to the Farmers Market was fruitful :). I happened upon a table with the most beautiful ripe strawberries.  The first local berries I've seen.  The cold, wet spring plus some kind of virus attacking several large producers has made them hard to find.
While waiting to pay, the lady next to me struck up a conversation.  We were wondering how much the berries were and discussing how it really didn't matter because it was such a short season and we should treat ourselves to things we like.  We both noted the lack of berries in the grocery stores as they should be plentiful now and how happy we were to find these.

She was next to pay.  The man said she owed $5.50 .......... Yes, $5.50 a PINT.......

We looked at each other and burst out laughing.  "Good thing we don't care how much they cost" she says.    That price is about double what we usually pay.

So I'm going to enjoy every one of these little red delights, because they are about as valuable as gold this year!

  7. Nice strawberries... big price... The first ones are always more expensive.
The winter and all the rain must have had something to do with the price plus the cost of fuel and labour.
I used to grow and sell strawberries locally and they are a lot of work.

I can no longer eat them as I've developed an allergy to them and I swell up badly. I grew them until a few years ago for the grandkids but the weeds got the better of them after a while.

    Hugs,
    JB

  9. Beautiful berries....I'm not a huge strawberry fan (yeah, I know...something definitely wrong in these genes, hey?), but I do welcome the season and enjoy a few....especially on strawberry pizza.... Me thinks it will be a while yet for berries in these parts...Everything is so dreadfully delayed this year. And how quickly we went from snow to monsoon season...Pretty soon things will be rotting in the fields. Go figure...last year drought, this year, rain a'plenty.... Happy Sunday! 10. They are beautiful. Sorry the crop has been disappointing there. The strawberries in our garden are just beginning to blossom. There are quite a few. I hope they get the right weather so that they're good berries this year. Strawberries are such a delight!

They are like gold. 5.50 a pint just blows my mind.
I bet they tasted good though.
I do hope you have a wonderful, and restful Sunday.

  13. The strawberries that are at the farms are $5.99 a pint. They are however, much cheaper if you pick them yourself. We just had strawberry short cake for our lunch today. Soooo good!

  15. Your strawberries look scrumptious! We're actually in town this weekend, so we went to the farmer's market in our neighborhood, too! We bought some early summer squash. I'll post a recipe on Tuesday!
