Wednesday Word of the Week

This week's edition of the Word of the Week features........

bal·der·dash   [bawl-der-dash]

1. senseless, stupid, or exaggerated talk or writing; nonsense.

2. Obsolete . a muddled mixture of liquors.
Origin:   1590–1600; of obscure origin

I think it is fair to say that this word could apply to a majority of my posts.   It is also a word that has popped into my mind several times this week.

I really can't post anything related to my job but if I could you would often be rolling on the floor.

Really, whoever originally said "There is no such thing as a stupid question"......was a MORON.  Because I hear them on a regular basis !  There have been times in the past few days that I have been rendered speechless ---- (which is quite a feat).

I sat in my office this afternoon,  attempting with all my inner strength to maintain some degree of professionalism and all I could do was utter a string of grunt-like syllables  "Uhmm, ahh,  buttttt, huh"

I'm kind of a "tell it like it is" gal, so it was hard for me not to say "Are you freaking nuts??"

While I'm listening to all this Balderdash I sometimes hear my grandmothers voice in my head.  She had lots of little "balderdashy" sayings.

- The lights are on but nobody's home.
- That boy's as sharp as a sack of wet mud.
- His/her elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor.
- ......not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
- ....dumb as a bag of rocks.

How's your week going?

  1. Do you work where I used to work???
    :o))))) Robin

  2. In the building business, we like to say "one bubble off plumb" or "not the sharpest tool in the shed"! I love your balderdash ~ I'll keep reading as long as you keep writing!!

  3. If I could blog about my work day, I'd have so many hysterical things to share...but then I'd have no job! It's a shame, really. So much good material going to waste! ;-)
    Aren't people, well...funny?
Thank goodness for your funny posts!

  4. Kim, I think we work with the same people. Once you hear "I hope you don't think this a stupid question", you know right off, it is stupid! Somewhat like last night's debate with our "leaders",

-one taco short of a combo plate.
-a few beans short of a chalupa.
-one sandwich short of a picnic
    -a few beers short of a six-pack
    - his/her rocket isn’t working on all thrusters.
    -one chopstick short
-his/her antenna doesn't pick up all channels

and finally, because I am in Newfoundland, smart as bait!

  5. keep notes you should write a book in retirement:0)

  6. OMG! The comic about the asking stupid questions... I'm rolling on the floor in tears... I can only imagine the specific stories from your job... I'm with cathy... take notes to write a novel in retirement... you would sell a million plus copies! :-)

  7. I really like Balderdash. I also would have really liked your grandmother. I love all of those sayings. Yes, keep notes then you can keep us laughing at the things people come up with.
I wish I could come to work and just listen to what you hear every day.
    I enjoy your words.

  8. Boy , I love your cartoons. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I remember my old job I worked at a 400 bed hospital in the lab and there were not many stupid questions but lot of impatient people and that is including staff.

  9. Good day Kim, I like your word this week. My Dad used to say.."that boy is as stupid as a stick" I still get a kick out of it when I think of it because he was usually right!!
I hope spring is still popping out all over NS. Are the May flowers blooming yet? I have great memories of walking in the woods to get the first May flowers in the spring to bring home to Mom.
    Have a great day!

  10. My experience is that work zombies speak balderdash. I sit in relentless meetings anticipating what delusional, discombobulated, loopy thoughts come out of their mouths. Brain cells are demolished in these meetings. The vindictive part of me wants to grope for a sharp object and obliterate the losers in the group who are causing me to have a migraine.

I know my comments are balderdash! Whatever! :)

  11. Oh LOL, What a great post!
All I can say is I agree.
My fave word is discombobulated because thats just what things are.
I also like "supercalifradgelisticexpialidocious" but that is just because I can say it and it makes me feel good when I get something wrong :)

  12. Awesome Michelle these just keep getting better and better. Bravo!!

  13. Yes, its nice to know that Michelle is still sharp after all that sun lounging by a pool in Florida! Lol (Yup, I'm still a little jealous!)

  14. Yes - back from Florida and back to work. . . sigh. Had to trade my flip flops in for real shoes. . . . at least I didn't need snow boots!

  15. Kim, I's love to be a fly on the wall of your office to hear all those stupid balderdash questions, I'd probably be one of those who ask them, he, he... You should write them down in a book and when you retire, use them to entertain people as a comedian like Bob Newhart. I like his style. JB
