Pillow talk

I got cracking first thing this morning and started sewing the back on the pillow.  Martie from Taos Sunflower  asked me how I finished the backing.  I did take a couple of not great pics while I was working.

First I did a double zigzag with the sewing machine close to the hooked edge.  Then I layed the pillow front on the backing and secured with some pins.

I trimmed the excess from the backing and then began to fold the fabrics under and do a simple, discreet whip stitch along the edge.

It didn't take nearly as long as I thought and it wasn't nearly as painful a chore as I anticipated :)
The finished result ........

Earlier today I got some bad news.  My neighbor at the cottage passed away.  Our cottages were built the same year, so we have been neighbors forever.  Before Mom got so sick, I used to move out to the beach all summer.  Every weekend morning we would each go out on our respective decks, in our jammies and bathrobes, turn our chairs to face each other and have our morning coffee talk together.   Mary Louise loved flowers so this flower is for her.  She will be missed.

  1. I'm sorry to hear abour lour loss Kim. Loosing a neighbour like that is very sobering. You have lots of good memories of living nextdoor but somehow she will still be occupying a little part of your heart just the same.

On a happier note, your little pillow looks just adorable. You work fast. Thanks for posting a picture of it for us.

I hope that you have a good week Kim.

    Hugs, JB

  5. I wish I had any kind of sewing skills. I am lucky if I can put on a button. Usually I just throw the shirt out rather than even attempt it.

  6. Kim,
I'm so sorry to hear your dear friend has passed. Take special care this week and find comfort in the memories like the one you shared.
Your pillow is wonderful! That's how I usually finish mine too...... like you said it really isn't that hard to do!
    Prayers and hugs!

  7. Kim: Thanks for the lesson. It's so much easier than I had guessed; I was thinking I had to use a sewing machine and was, as my dad used to say, drowning in a puddle.

I'm super sorry to hear about your neighbor/friend. I'm glad she'll live on in your good memories of your visits. XXX

  10. It's hard to lose an old friend but you'll always have the memories. Your pillow is cute and finishing by hand is about the only way!

  11. I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend and neighbor. Losing someone is hard. My mother-in law passed away a little over a week ago on July 2oth. She was ill for a long time but still very spry. I feel so bad for my husband. He took excellent care of her. Lets hope the rest of the summer is better.

On a happier note the pillow came out awesome.

  12. So very to hear of Mary Louise's passing and your loss. Wow - makes me feel like I've been gone ages. Wishing you peace and comfort in her memories....Your pillow is so sweet.....No matter how painless, I still hate finishing things....unless it's binding a hooked rug - for some strange, twisted, reason, I enjoy that! Hugs ~ Robin
