I like it so far. If it turns out really nice I wouldn't mind making another. I usually don't have success hooking the same pattern twice. It my notorious short attention span - I lose interest quickly once its done.
Now, as promised, here is the Gumdrop Cake recipe. I can't believe how many of you commented that you had never heard of this cake. It is such a staple this time of year around here. I did ask a few more questions about the mystery of the green gumdrops.
Some of the family say that the green gumgrops have a stronger minty flavor than the other colors and that may be why she didn't use too many.
Susan suggested that green candies make you amorous........LOL Well I don't know about that but I doubt that was Grandma's reason for omitting them. She thought my grandfather was the "cats pyjamas" so if Susan's theory was true, she would have used ALL green.
Here is the recipe:
1 cup butter or margarine
8 oz. cream cheese softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 tsp each vanilla, lemon, almond extract
4 eggs
2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
16 ounces gumdrops - cut in half or thirds
(save 1/2 cup of the flour to toss the gumdrops in - otherwise the gumdrops will all sink to the bottom)
Bake at 325 for an hour and a half.
Try it - you'll like it.
Hey, this sounds easy, and I bet it is colorful too. Think I'll buy some gumdrops tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of cream cheese in this...yum! I'll bet it's pretty when sliced!!
ReplyDeleteI am going to make that cake. It sounded so good when you talked about it.
ReplyDeleteI really love your rug, I keep trying to think of something Christmases y but nothing yet.
Have a great evening.

I must have missed your post on that cake - but it sounds good so I made a copy of it. Thanks. sandie
ReplyDeleteYeah, I too was surprised to see that a lot of your followers never heard of gumdrop cake. I googled it and it's an old recipe from the forties. It's been around for a long time. gumdrop cookies are good too.
ReplyDeleteKim, your Christmas mat is beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. have a great weekend. JB
The rug looks very pretty..or it will be when you're finished! Thanks for the recipe, I can't wait to try it out! I love old recipes that are tried and true..I'll let you know how it comes out. I would limit a gumdrop that has mint in it too. She was a smart lady! Or maybe she just ate all those green ones herself and that's why Grampa was her true love!
ReplyDeleteLOVING your new rug Kim - the colors are yummy....Thanks for the recipe....Might have to give this a whirl...if I can find gumdrops - yikes - had a hankering for some neopolitan candies (remember those?) a few months back(don't know why - never liked them when I was young....), and still haven't found any....Anywho - I was thinking that's why grams limited the amount green gummies too - I'm not too fond of the minty ones either.....Happy, happy, December my friend....Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin
ReplyDeleteGreat looking Christmas hooking project. What a neat recipe for gumdrop cake. Isn't that funny about the green candy. I asked a friend about the legend after commenting on your blog. She has heard of that too. HILARIOUS!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the colors going into this rug. Ok I am dense but I thought that maybe the "gum drops" were candied fruit. This would make great cupcakes with gum drops on the top. Hope your stitches are good.

Thanks for the recipe - can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an easy enough recipe. Maybe I could even do it! (And that is saying something.)
