The Labor Day debate

Its time again for my annual discussion about "the rules".  More specifically -- white after Labor Day.  I remember the ritual when I was growing up.  During the long weekend in May the ladies would get out their whites - the shoes, sandals, pants and of course the purses.

And then the reverse on Labor Day.  My grandmother would be "horrified" to see someone out in mid September with a white purse.  She probably referred to them as rebel hippies.  Lol

I realize now that "anything goes" and this fashion faux pas is disappearing faster than the dinosaurs but I am still hanging on.  Just because "anything goes" doesn't mean it should.  I mean if you look around or watch the news it seems like there is just too much of the whole "anything goes" stuff.

I like a little tradition and ritual. So my white seashell flip flops will be disappearing.

Luckily not all white is banned.  As with all rules there is always an exception.  Here it is (I was worried)

So, do you "white" after Labor Day??

  3. My white shoes are "going into hiding" until Memorial Day 2014. Also, the white, seersucker-type cropped pants as well as that white summery jacket. I will be wearing some "winter" white pants, particularly around festive times, with bright, jewel-toned tops. Probably due to my "conditioning" from years past, but I just feel more comfortable with these choices.:-)

  4. Kim...I don't always comment but I do always read and I must say you always cheer me up. Love, love, love your humor.
I don't wear much white (makes me look fat!) LOL but I wear lots of black...the other night we were out on the town and I felt the same about sporting my "black" purse before Labor Day. How sad are we!

  6. My mother always had the same rule - no white after Labor Day, and for sure white came out after Memorial Day. Then again, my mother wouldn't approve of my Wolverine hikers footwear either. lol

  7. As I get older, I don't go by the Labor Day date, I go by the weather and temperature. I'll wear white pants or shorts as long as it's warm. I'm not bothered by what others people wear and I wear a lot of black any way. I'm not a fad follower and do pretty much as I please within reason. I do not try to bring attention to myself but like to be comfortable. It must be my old age. I just feel good in my skin, it's not too tight and has plenty of room to spare, lol. I found that the older I get, the less I care what others think. If they don't approve, it's their problem and not mine. I know that life is made for living.

  9. I have been wrestling with myself on whether I can still wear my white capris. I know, I'm pathetic :)

  10. Well so you know, I never do wear white after Labor Day. I can hear my grandmother's voice to loud in my head. I mean after all rules is rules.
So of course every thing will be put away until spring.
Do you know the first post I ever read that you wrote was white after Labor Day. I was so happy because I felt like the only dinosaur in the world that still followed that rule. :)

  11. No white (unless winter white wool) after Labor day for me. Some things stick in your head forever.. like the "make sure you have on clean underwear in case you get in an accident" rule. LOL

  13. Well all I wear is shorts in summer, jeans on cooler days/winter. I have never been a white shorts, pants, capris wearer so no issue there. White shoes in winter, nope. I do wear winter white. But I pretty much wear what I want. I don't follow any rules when it comes to clothes. I just wear comfy. I have a white cotton v-neck sweater, I will be wearing it tonight with jeans for dinner with family.

    Good Morning Kim!

  14. Heck yes! Who invented that rule and WHY? All my bras are white. Most of my undies too. It's not like I have money to go buy different colored bras just to follow a rule like no whites after Labor's Day. So I say, Heck yes. If I can wear white bras, why not white socks too? (I just checked, I am wearing white socks) And I also get confused... how long after Labors Day does that rule apply?

Once upon a time I would follow rules like that. But then living in poverty just really changed me a lot. You had to do what you had to do. You had to survive. Things like that just stopped being important to me. My priorities changed and I got a horrible reality check.

Haven't been able to change back for some reason. Maybe it is the fear of going back into poverty that I don't want to lose everything all over again. Not sure. But I remember how fun it would be to hold onto rules like that.

  15. I wonder where this tradition started? Good thing there's no rules about wearing black or jeans----I'd be in big trouble.

  16. I always stuck to the "white" rule. However, I just bought a white skirt on sale...can I wear it if I don't wear white shoes? So much white...so little time...
