Wednesday Word of the Week

The word of the week is......Demolish

de·mol·ish     [dih-mol-ish]

–verb (used with object)

1. to destroy or ruin (a building or other structure), especially on purpose; tear down; raze.

2. to put an end to; destroy; explode: The results of his research demolished many theories.

3. to lay waste to; ruin utterly: The fire demolished the area.

4. Informal . to devour completely: We simply demolished that turkey.

A bit locally appropriate today as we are currently demolishing one of the buildings in our downtown core.  Known to the locals as the "Bird Building", this landmark has been vacant for a number of years and has fallen into a state of being Dangerous and Unsightly.   One of the saddest factors of this demolition is that this 4 storey building featured a large mural painted on one side which was very visible and popular.
This particular mural depicted the Old Home Week Parade of 1910.  It is certainly a sad thing to see it go into a pile of rubble however it seems to be a common theme as many of the old larger buildings in many small towns become just too costly to keep maintained etc.  Many owners just simply walk away, as in this case. And once the neglect gets so far it becomes more difficult to find investors with deep enough pockets.

On another note - this cold has demolished my will to live.  It has moved from my chest to my head.  I am now dealing with the 4 S's - Sniffing, Snuffing, Snorting and Sneezing.   Bahhhhh !
And lasting, my in-box is not getting demolished.  In fact the darn thing is growing - like a weed.   Too many to-do's and not enough tah-dah's this week.

  1. Kim, what a great mural. Too bad that they can't salvage it. I bet it took someone a great deal of time and paint and planning to paint that beautiful mural.

So sorry that you are still suffering from the 4 S's My cold seems to get worst at night. I just have a bit of the runny nose at the moment. I still don't feel great by any stretch of the imagination but I'm coping.

Sending you some sanitizes healing vibes and sanitized hugs. JB

  2. I do hope you can rest a bit. That mural is beautiful, I can't imagine that building be demolished. What a wonderful thing to stand and look at. What does the other side look like? I wish I lived there, I would buy it. :)

  3. You need a hot toddy, girl!! And fast! Colds are the worst! They sound so minor, but really they are the pits! It's sad to see changes in the hometown...the old going out from neglect! Shows I'm getting older...that I grieve these things!
I'm planning your package...I need to share color info with you...I've got a lot of purples, some great blues, and maroons...do you knit? If you don't, then I'll do something else!! Feel better!!!
    Hugs,
    Courtney

  6. Kim ~
I love old buildings and how sad that one with such a great mural had to be torn down!
I hope you are feeling better soon.
I don't have a cold, but I'm still not doing too good with the tah-dahs!
    Healing hugs :)

  7. It is sad to see the old buildings come down. Currently we have 2 historic buildings that we've been trying to sell. They are part of my inlaws estate...but the economy is not renovation favorable. So they sadly sit. We would need more money that sense to take it on ourselves. Hope you feel better soon. I'm also under the weather and I have not forgotten the "pay it forward" post and will get on it soon..promise!

  8. Demolish and obliterate those relentless 4S's and migraines! You can get loopy and/or delusional from blowing your nose that many times. You start to feel like a loser with a red nose so grope for another tissue - be vindictive with the cold meds! Colds. . . . whatever. . . .go buy shoes!

  9. Kim a very cool mural and a beautiful building. Sometimes ya have to wonder what were they thinking. That has happened to more buildings than I can count in downtown St. Louis here in Missouri. Seems that we could take better care of our history. I miss some of those buildings and landmarks. CH had the hacking sneezing stuffy thing go on for quite awhile. I think you are working your way thru it, just not fast enough!
