The Hot Cross Conspiracy

I want to get to the bottom of this.  Easter hasn't been the same for years since the hot cross bun got all fancy.    I remember how happy we used to be just before Easter when the grocery stores started having hot cross buns.
They were special because they were only available for a short time.  They were soft and moist, with a few raisins and of course that yummy frosting cross.    My mother and I would only want to eat the tops, much to the dismay of the rest of the family who would find just the bottoms in the package.  We would sneak them together when nobody else was around.  Lol Then about 10 years ago or so, something dark and disturbing happened.  We purchased our annual buns, sliced one open, and saw bits of foreign objects.  Yellow and orangy fruit bits or something.  Yuck!   Not being people to concede defeat we assumed it was some weird new trend just at that store.  We went to several other stores and low and behold ALL the buns were contaminated with these little fruity bits.
We even tried to pick them out before we ate them.  Yes we really did this.  But it wasn't the same.   They had been ruined by some kind of societal twist.   I want my soft, simple hot cross buns back.   Help!!  Just raisins, no funny stuff.   Stop the madness people!

  2. I was going to make some this year, with just raisins.
I just want plain and normal. I don't even know if they are even in the stores here.
I think that is a cute story about you and your Mom.
Well, I hope you find them.

  3. Gosh...why does everything have to change? :( I'm with you just leave 'em alone. I am not a raisin person so I would just like plain soft, moist, yummy bun with the frosting across.
Have a great rest of the week Kim.
    Take care, Janet W

  4. Worse yet in our area, the icing now comes in (gasp!) PINK and YELLOW!!!
And yes, they contain those tough little pieces of multicolored mystery 'fruit'.
    Nothing is sacred!

I haven't checked the Amish bakery. Maybe there's hope...

  6. I don't think I've ever had a hot cross bun. I'm in California if that makes a difference. I like raisins, I like frosting...maybe I should look around. LOL

  8. Oh yuck! Reminds me of the horrible fruit cakes which make their appearance at Christmas time in the US.

  9. Ha,ha, cute storey about you and your mom eating only the top.
I love hot cross buns with raisins and never had some with bits of dried fruits in them. I make my own because they taste so much nicer fresh from the oven so this is news to me...
I happen to like fruit cakes but not all fruit cake taste good. I'm not a fan of dark fruit cake. I make my own from a recipe I love.
    Hugs,

  12. What a sweet memory of mom!
I've heard of them, but don't think I ever had one. I did see them in the store the other day, but which one?
    Happy Easter,
