Thankful

This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving.  I have so much to be thankful for - my family, my great friends, a job I enjoy most days, a full pantry......I could go on and on.   But right now, after finishing our huge thanksgiving dinner, what I am the most thankful for is LYCRA.   God Bless stretchy pants!!

The leftovers have all been put away.  So that means tomorrow I don't have to cook.  Bonus!  At some point tomorrow there will probably a turkey soup simmering on the stove.  Maybe even pumpkin pie for breakfast.  I love thanksgiving!

This brings up the annual thanksgiving debate that was likely heard in many houses this weekend.  Jellied or whole berry?  Cranberry lovers generally have strong feelings one way or the other.   Here in this house it's JELLY.  None of that yucky lumpy stuff on my plate.

I was finishing up the grocery shopping Friday and standing in front of the cranberry shelf next to this little old prim and proper lady.  I was half panicked as all I saw were cans and cans of whole berry sauce.  You can't have thanksgiving without the comforting slurp and plop of that jelly falling out of the can!  There was a brief exchange of chit chat with the lady who was seemingly becoming frustrated with my moving all the cans out of my way, straining to look at the back.  There had to be one can left. The old bitty crinkled up her nose and looked at me with "berry" superiority and announced "I only eat the whole berry".    Well......whoop-de-friggin-do!!!

Finally, I moved another can and low and behold there was one lone can way in the back.  I grabbed it.    I smiled at the lady in victory and felt compelled to note that most people must prefer the jellied because it was sold out and there were about a hundred whole berry cans left!

Jelly or lumpy?  What's your choice?

Happy Thanksgiving

  1. I am so glad you found what you like best. I like the fresh berries made into sauce. I can't help it. Once I liked the jellied kind out of the can and then once I tried fresh, I converted. :)
I am so glad you had a lovely Thanksgiving. It sounds so nice.

  4. I will take lumpy over jelly, but nothing compares to the the fresh sauce my mom ground with fresh cranberries and apples.
So happy you found your jellied sauce and had a "filling" day.
    Hugs :)

  6. I'm the fresh berry, lumpy sauce kind of old fashion kid, I guess and so are all the girls in my family. We put orange juice in ours, very yummy. I even love it on toasts. I'm glad that you found your can of jellied cranberries.

I had turkey with all the trimmings and I delivered some hot meals to my granddaughter and was about to deliver one to my son but someone beat me to it. So I still have lots of turkey left. It's turkey a la King tomorrow I guess and then I'll have to be creative...

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving Day to you!! I like the jelly kind. If I eat the lumpy stuff I like it to be made from fresh cranberries.with grated orange in a relish.

  9. Well, Kim. I actually buy neither. I buy fresh cranberries and make my own cranberry sauce as well as cranberry orange relish. I will probably do that on the Monday of Thanksgiving week. Both are better if they have a day or two to "age." :-) Incidentally, we will have near 20 here on Thanksgiving Day! I will be doing as much ahead of time as absolutely possible!

I send Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you! Enjoy those leftovers!

  10. I grew up with the jellied but I make a cranberry relish with fresh berries so I guess that would put me in the lumpy category! (However, I would never "diss" anyone's love of smooth!) Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. Jelly! And I enjoyed the story of the "Whole Berry Lady"... lol! Seems like it can be seemlessly added to the movie "A Christmas Story". Happy Thanksgiving to you!

    Happy Thanksgiving to you !
If I have time, I like to make homemade Cranberry Sauce with cranberries, oranges, grapes and walnut pieces. Yum !

  17. I used to only eat jellied from a can, my entire childhood. It was not Thanksgiving without a slice of round cranberry flavored jelly. But then I had the fresh at Kim's house and I've been changed ever since. I even make fresh for our own Thanksgivings now and I'll never go back!

  18. Sorry so late with this Kim glad you had a good Thanksgiving...mmmm, I love turkey leftovers. Myself I like the homemade cranberry sauce, smells so good when it's cooking. Our family however likes cranberry mold made with whole cranberry sauce, fruit, nuts and jello. But I don't always make it.

  19. Definitely jelly. I even mix some with a little mayo and smear on a bun with leftover turkey - yummy sandwich.
